Workshops in bellydance and bellydance fusion choreography, props and technique take place regularly in south London. Students who participate in choreography workshops are invited to join rehearsals and perform at the Brixton Hafla. Please see the schedule below for upcoming workshops.

Kimberly Mackoy studied bellydance under Rachel Brice, Frederique David, Suhaila Salimpour and other jaw-dropping innovators in San Francisco . Her style of tribal fusion blends buttery continuous movement with energetic hip work, utilizing modern and ancient elements to transcend the usual boundaries around regions and moments in time. The influences are truly international, coming together in the gaze of a creative eye that integrates them into something fresh and entirely unexpected.
Tribal fusion catches the eye with smooth isolations and controlled, muscular movement; to achieve this, the first part of class is devoted to conditioning, muscle awareness and drilling essential moves. Further attention is devoted to technique, fine tuning movement and learning to bring everything together within a choreography in the second part of class.

Learn how to paint pictures with a slip of fabric. A veil is one of the most iconic images for bellydancers around the world, most highly developed by Turkish dancers in the American nightclubs of the 50's and 60's. Learn American Northwestern style veil technique incorporating aeroplane spins, shoulder flips, butterflies and envelopes. The first class of this short 4 week course will focus on basic veil technique with each of the following classes working towards building a full choreography.

February 7 Finger Cymbol Workshop Finger cymbols are a percussion instrument that can be used by the bellydancer or as an accompaniment to a bellydancer. Percussion mimics the beating of the heart, and learning your sagat internalizes Middle Eastern rhythms better than any other other tool of dance. We will focus on 4 major patterns with a brief description of further patterns included in a class hand-out.
This workshop will cater to the level of the students present. For students with a knowlege of basic sagat patterns we will be incorporating dance combinations and greater speed. For beginner students there will be the option to sit and focus on learning your rhythms. Please indicate your level when you register.
**This workshop is a requirement for students in the advanced class who are not familiar with the basic finger cymbol patterns**

Learn a full choreography to a 2 part Egyptian Drum Solo. The rhythm of the Egyptian drum is funked up with new bounce in this sassy drum solo for intermediate and advanced level bellydancers! Drum solos give dancers the opportunity to be clever and have fun and this one takes the cake with it's street edge and rumbling, bouncing hip work...

Come along and find out! 2 years ago we brought you a new style of bellydance/regaetton fusion that has proven to be extremely popular and now we're wondering what we can do with a a little bhangra... If you loved the regaetton/fusion but found it a little too strenuous for your comfort this is the one for you! Be prepared for an intensive, energetic workshop for Intermediate level bellydancers up and also open to street dancers with instructor permission.
